Team USA Strikes Gold and Silver
The results are in, its 1 Gold and 1 Silver for Team USA! Thanks to Shelley Lipton, and Jake Lease for all the photos contributed from Mexico.In the gold medal fight, Nishi faced Karina Diaz (Dominican Republic) and clinched first place by scoring on Diaz in an overtime faceoff.
“This medal means validation to me,” said Nishi. “It's been a long time since I took home a gold medal. This was a hard fight to win – I had to dig deep. My teammates, sensei, friends and family back home supported me and that support kept me going.”
Along her journey to the top of the podium, Nishi also defeated fighters from Brazil, Guatemala and Mexico. Nishi’s fight against Jessy Reyes (Chile) ended in a, 0-0, hikiwake, meaning a draw was judged.
Scott faced Dionisio Gustavo (Dominican Republic) in the gold medal match which he lost, 2-2, in a Hantei decision, which is a call made by the senior judge to the corner judges for a final judgment. In the preliminary rounds, Scott and Gustavo ended their fight in a, 0-0, hikiwake.
“My Pan American Games experience was really fantastic and prepared me to fight in future tournaments,” said Scott. "And, I hope to be back for gold at another Pan American Games.”
On his way to the gold medal match and eventual silver medal, Scott defeated fighters from Cuba, Ecuador and El Salvador.
In the men’s 67kg, Brian Mertel (Palatine, Ill.) was unable to qualify out of preliminary play. He recorded a, 0-0, hikiwake against Dennis Novo (Cuba); 1-1, hikiwake against Daniel Viveros (Ecuador); and lost, 0-2, to Delvis Ferreras (Dominican Republic). Viveros went on to win the gold medal, while Novo took silver.
