This event is organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and is sanctioned and recognized as the official World University Championships by the World Karate Federation (WKF).  It will feature high level competition from around the world, and is one of the top Senior events that USA Karate participates in.

We will be holding a National University Team Trial to select the athletes that will represent the United States on Sunday, May 6 in Louisville, CO in conjunction with the Rocky Mountain Championships.  The top athlete from each of the 12 divisions (1 male kata, 1 female kata, 5 male kumite (-60kg, -67kg, -75kg, -84kg, +84kg), & 5 female kumite (-50kg, -55kg, -61kg, -68kg, +68kg)) will have the opportunity to represent the United States in Bratislava this July.

To be eligible to participate in both the University Team Trials and the World University Championships, athletes must meet the following requirements:

1)    Must have been born between January 1, 1984 and December 31, 1994
2)    Must be enrolled in or have graduated within the previous 6 months and accredited US University or College
3)    Graduating High School Seniors who will be enrolled in an accredited US University or College for the 2012 Fall Semester are also eligible to participate

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PARTICIPATION IN THE WORLD UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS

The World University Championships will be held at the same time as the USA National Karate Championships & US Team Trials.  Therefore, anyone who participates in the World University Karate Championships in Slovakia will not be able to participate in the US National Team Trials and will therefore not be able to participate at the 2012 WKF World Championships, the 2013 North American Cup, or the 2013 Senior Pan American Championships.  There will be no exceptions to this rule, and participation in the University Team Trials and the World University Championships indicates acceptance of this condition.
