Movie soundtracks
What is your favorite music group or artist?
A band called Alter Bridge
Do you listen to music before you go it the ring? If so, what kind?
I actually don't listen to music before I go in anymore. Music can get me too pumped up sometimes.
Do you have any pets? What kind?
I have a dog and a cat. My 16 year old min pin is blind and deaf now and has been my lifelong pet
What is your pets name?
Rickie the dog and Little the cat
Do you have any hidden talents?
I am a good shot with a handgun and enjoy doing police training stress courses
How many hours a week do you workout in preparation for a major tournament?
13
Is this your first World Championships?
What are your thoughts about the World Championships in Paris?
This will be my second world championships to compete in. I am ready, I have a plan, I can't wait to be there! Paris is supposed to be the world championships of all world championships so there is no better opportunity to take it! -75kg is a strong division and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Do you have a lucky charm? What is it?
I have tons of small crosses, a Japanese charm for victory and another for wisdom. I don't really keep them for luck. I keep them to remind me of certain things: my goals (outside of victory), what's really important, and my faith. It helps keep things in perspective during competition which I feel is one of my best strengths.
Who is your favorite superhero?
Iron man is pretty frat, but I am obsessed with The Dark Night movies
Who is your hero in real life? Why?
My father. It has taken me years to realize some of his greatest attributes (probably the case with most sons :)). I now see how much effort he and my mother have put into their work not only to provide for the three of us, but also to give us the opportunity to choose our own paths and take them as far as we were willing. I've had the chance to see what all he does in a day's work, and for him to come home day-by-day with no complaints is inspirational. He is and always has been so patient. As they say: quick to listen and slow to speak. I owe much to my parents, and love them dearly. :)
Hobbies
I like to shoot, fish, and go boating, but I also enjoy the occasional cigar with my coaches and training partners.
Favorite Quote
"You cannot dream yourself into a character. You must hammer and forge yourself into one." -Henry D. Thoreau
Biggest Win. Why?
The 2012 Pan American Karate Championships in Nicaragua was my favorite trip I've ever been on. PKF has always been a goal of mine for a long time. And to get gold in kilo and open weight at the same time was well worth the wait. But the best part about it for me was the encouragement that my coaches, my teammates and I are on the right path together. Shout out to WIKF Texas!
What do you love about competition?
I love the thrill of competition. Practicing keeping your cool in high pressure is a blast. Everyone loves to win, but I've realized now that isnt always up to us. There are many uncontrollable factors in competition. What I really love is the challenge of accomplishing goals, the challenge of character, and the challenge to improve: each year, each event, every day.
Favorite way to relax?
On hot Texas evenings my brother Chase and I will go golfing or play video games. Our family loves swimming out back and relaxing in the hot tub together almost every night. And we watch the Texas Rangers play baseball just about every day during the summer.
Advice for the youth athletes in karate?

My advice for junior athletes is to be patient. Don't get discouraged by a loss. Our greatest performances are often spurred by a loss, so welcome the opportunity to grow. I would'nt trade my history, losses, and silver medals for anything, it became my character. If nothing can discourage you, what can stop you? Right now you should be learning lessons. Heck, we'll always be learning lessons. Analyze your performances so you can improve by not making the same mistakes, and keeping what you do well. Again be patient, hungry and stay humble because your time is coming.

1 Peter 5:6

Where do you get your inspiration from?
I get my inspiration from my faith. Jesus Christ has become my backbone and safety net. I am young, and I may not yet know everything about Him, but because of what little I have learned, I feel free to stand tall and fear not the trials of daily life, the shortcomings of humanity & the world, and especially what happens in the ring. :) I hope I can go out and do good in the world.

2 Corinthians 5:17
