USA Karate Unveils Exciting Changes in National Coaching Structure

Colorado Springs, Colo. (March 22, 2024) – USA Karate, the national governing body for the sport of karate in the United States, is pleased to announce significant changes to its high-performance and national coaching structure, effective immediately.

“USA Karate is investing the resources necessary to identify, develop and train world-class athletes as we seek to become a global leader,” said USA Karate CEO Michael Cain. “It’s critical that we structure our programs in a way that maximizes those investments and puts our athletes in position to succeed. I’m excited about these updates and grateful for the individuals who have stepped into these leadership roles.”

Brody Burns Appointed as Director of Sport

On March 1, 2024, Brody Burns, a respected figure in USA Karate for more two decades, assumed the newly created position of Director of Sport. This role, strategically designed to bolster the Federation's efforts in advancing the sport of Karate, will see Burns reporting directly to the CEO. As Director of Sport, Burns will be instrumental in managing, coordinating, and overseeing the National Teams, National Coaching Staff, and related programs. His responsibilities encompass the development and implementation of a robust High-Performance Plan, in collaboration with stakeholders across USA Karate. Moreover, Burns will play a pivotal role in shaping policies and procedures to formalize best practices, thus providing a structured framework within the Federation. With his unparalleled expertise and track record of success, Burns is poised to elevate USA Karate to new heights on the global stage.

Head Coaches for Key Programs

In a strategic move to further strengthen the National Team Program, USA Karate has appointed Head Coaches to lead five key programs crucial for nurturing talent and fostering excellence:

  • Dustin Baldis: Head Coach - Kumite Program
  • B. Maile Chinen: Head Coach - Youth Development Program
  • Jeff Kohn: Head Coach - Para Karate Program
  • Javier Mantilla: Head Coach - Kata Program
  • Chris Statis: Head Coach - Sports Performance Program

These Head Coaches were selected following a rigorous process, including interviews with the CEO, Chairman of the Athlete Advisory Commission, existing Head Coaches, and the Director of Sport. Their expertise and leadership will be instrumental in driving the success of their respective programs and shaping the future of USA Karate. These coaches will report to the new Director of Sport.

Expansion of National Coaching Staff

In addition to the newly appointed Head Coaches, USA Karate has expanded its National Coaching Staff for the 2024-2026 seasons. The following individuals have been named as National Coaches:

  • Tony Mendonca
  • Cheryl Murphy
  • Luis Sanchez

Their inclusion reflects USA Karate's commitment to fostering a diverse and talented coaching cohort, capable of guiding athletes to achieve their full potential on the international stage.
