USA Karate Introduces New Two-Phase Selection Process for 2025 US Junior Team
by USA-NKF
Colorado Springs, CO – May 10, 2025 — USA Karate is proud to announce the implementation of a new two-phase selection process for the 2025 US Junior Team, marking a major evolution in how athletes are chosen to represent the country at the highest levels of international competition.
For the first time, junior athletes will undergo a two-phase trial system, designed to ensure fairness, competitiveness, and alignment with international best practices. This new structure allows for greater resilience and multiple opportunities for athletes to demonstrate their skills.
This year, the selection process begins with Phase 1 during the initial days of the 2025 National Championships, a single-elimination repechage bracket, through which the top four athletes will emerge. Those athletes will then advance to Phase 2, held on Sunday, July 13th, where they will compete in either a double-elimination bracket (Kumite) or a group reduction process (Kata) to determine their final placement on the national team. Please see the 2025 USA National Championships and Team Trials bulletin for the most up-to-date schedule.
“This updated format not only raises the bar for competitive integrity but also provides a clearer and more merit-based pathway for our athletes,” said Brody Burns, Director of Sport. “It is critical that all athletes and coaches carefully review the selection policy to ensure they understand the process and are prepared to compete if they qualify for Phase 2.”
The revised selection policy reflects USA Karate’s continued commitment to athlete development and preparation for international success. The full document outlining the 2025 US Junior Team Selection Policy is available HERE.
