Women’s History Month and Karate for Change

by USA NKF Staff

The Karate for Change all-female conference, which aimed to bring together female karate practitioners with an all-female lineup of presenters, was held over the weekend in New York. Among the seminar presenters were world medalists and current USA Team members Trinity Allen and Sakura Kokumai, USA National Coach Ashley Davis, USA-NKF Board Chair Elisa Au, and former world medalist from France, Sandy Scordo.

The President and Founder of Karate for Change, Cheryl Murphy, a former USA Team member and international medalist, shared her vision to hold an all-female conference that would inspire women and girls in karate. She asked her friends, former teammates, and all the seminar presenters, who all said yes.

The 3-day event featured over 30 participants from 10 states who put their practice to work at EGN tournament, held in Harlem, NY. The theme, "I Believe," adopted from Ted Lasso, was the mantra for the entire weekend. Olympian and World Champion women in sport karate dedicated their time to train and educate girls and women to be impactful leaders in their academic setting, dojos, community, workplace, and competition.

Karate for Change, Inc. aims to provide support to students and athletes in sports, especially Karate. From beginner-level students to elite Olympians, the organization aids in accessibility to classes, advanced training, supplies, transportation, equipment, and providing a safe environment to learn and thrive in. Their goal is to facilitate services and supply the resources needed on the journey to success, with a vision of equitable opportunities in life and in sports.

Karate for Change is growing and continuing to amplify the voices that often do not get heard, while striving for equity in sports and in life. The organization is grateful to all the parents, participants, sponsors, and donors who made the event successful. The 2024 edition of Karate for Change's Women's History Month conference is set to be even bigger and more impactful.
