Colorado Springs, CO — USA Karate has announced an updated eligibility structure for participation in the USA Karate National Championships, reinforcing the role of the National Tournament as the culminating event of the competitive season.

Beginning with the 2026 competitive season, athletes seeking to compete at the USA Karate National Championships will be required to meet one of two eligibility pathways. The primary pathway requires participation in at least one USA Karate designated National Qualifier event during the season. These events are sanctioned and approved by USA Karate and are conducted under consistent national standards.USA Karate will also offer a limited alternative pathway for athletes who are unable to attend a National Qualifier. In these cases, athletes may request eligibility through a Non-Qualifier Eligibility Fee at the time of National Championships registration. This option exists to provide flexibility while preserving the competitive integrity and purpose of the National Championship.

“The National Championships should reflect commitment to the competitive season, not just a single event,” said Brody Burns, Director of Sport for USA Karate. “This structure encourages athlete development, supports quality events across the country, and ensures that when athletes arrive at Nationals, they are prepared to compete at a true national standard.”USA Karate will publish the official list of National Qualifier events and all relevant registration details each season. Additional information, including athlete and parent guidance materials, will be made available through official USA Karate communication channels and posted at www.usankf.org
